Newborn registry checklist: what you actually need
Who this helps: first-time parents building a registry who suspect half the suggested list is filler. It is. This checklist sticks to what gets used daily through month three, with safety items anchored to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidance.
Use daily from day one
- Diapers + wipes, two sizes - newborn and size 1. Babies outgrow newborn fast; don't stockpile it.
- A safe sleep space - crib, bassinet, or play yard with a firm, flat, bare mattress, per AAP safe-sleep guidance. This is the non-negotiable safety item; spend here before gadgets.
- Car seat (infant or convertible) - in the US, hospitals generally require a properly installed car seat before you drive home. Check the manufacture date; car seats have manufacturer-set expiration dates.
- Swaddles or sleep sacks (3-4) - laundry cadence decides the count. Stop swaddling at the first signs of rolling, per AAP guidance.
- Onesies and sleepers, 6-8 each - zipper over snaps at 3am. Skip newborn-size shoes entirely.
- Burp cloths (8-10) - cloth prefold diapers work better than the printed ones.
Worth it for most families
- Changing pad + covers - a dresser top plus pad beats a dedicated table.
- White noise - cheap and genuinely helps; a dedicated machine outlasts phone apps.
- Baby carrier - many caregivers find structured carriers the easiest to fit; try the waistband adjustment before registering.
- Nasal aspirator + thermometer - the two health kit items you'll use in month one.
Skip or wait
- Wipe warmers, diaper stackers, changing tables - solutions to problems you won't have.
- Shoes, outfits with buttons, newborn hats beyond one - outgrown or unused.
- Crib bumpers, pillows, loose blankets - the AAP advises keeping all of these out of the infant sleep space, regardless of how they're marketed.
- Bottle ecosystems before baby arrives - babies have opinions. Register for one or two bottles of two brands, not a full set.
